Honda E-Compressor: how the electrically boosted V3 works
Honda is developing a motorcycle engine with an electrically driven compressor: the compressor is turned by an electric motor – not by the exhaust gas and not by the crankshaft. What Honda has shown so far, how the technology works and what the patents reveal. As of 23 October 2026.
What Honda has shown so far
At EICMA in Milan on 5 November 2024, Honda presented a newly developed, water-cooled V3 engine with a 75-degree cylinder angle. According to Honda, it is the first motorcycle engine with an electric compressor. Honda did not state a displacement at the time.
One year later, on 4 November 2025, the ready-to-ride “V3R 900 E-Compressor Prototype” with 900 cm³ followed at EICMA. Honda Switzerland writes that the forthcoming new V3 could “achieve performance on a par with a 1,200 cc engine”. This is a goal set by Honda, not a measured value: Honda has not published output, torque, weight or price to date.
How the Honda E-Compressor works
A compressor compresses the intake air before it flows into the cylinders. More air in the combustion chamber allows more fuel and therefore more power from the same displacement. In the Honda E-Compressor, an electric motor turns the compressor wheel. According to Honda, this allows the boost pressure to be controlled independently of engine speed – torque is said to be available instantly even at low revs.
Further points from Honda's announcements: the electric compressor can be positioned freely in the limited space of a motorcycle, which Honda uses to centralise mass. According to Honda, no intercooler is needed. In an interview in May 2026, a Honda official confirmed that the prototype carries its own battery for the compressor; he did not state the voltage or capacity.
Turbocharger, supercharger or E-Compressor?
All three systems compress air. The difference lies in what drives the compressor:
- Turbocharger: The exhaust gas drives a turbine, which turns the compressor via a shaft. The boost pressure depends on the volume of exhaust gas – and at low revs little exhaust gas is produced.
- Mechanical supercharger: The crankshaft drives the compressor via a gear drive. Its speed is rigidly linked to engine speed.
- Electric compressor: An electric motor drives the compressor, without exhaust gas and without a connection to the crankshaft. This allows it to deliver boost pressure independently of engine speed and exhaust gas volume.
In cars, electric compressors have been in series production since 2016. Honda's claim to be the first to use an electric compressor therefore applies explicitly to motorcycles.
What the patents show
On 4 June 2026, nine international patent applications from Honda were published; the original Japanese filings date from 27 to 29 November 2024. They describe a compressor driven by an electric motor that uses neither exhaust energy nor engine power. In addition, they cover:
- a bypass line from the air filter directly to the surge tank, through which the engine runs without forced induction – a valve selects between naturally aspirated and boosted operation,
- control of the compressor according to engine and riding conditions and the rider's desire to accelerate,
- versions for V engines with two to six cylinders and for in-line engines.
Patents show what a manufacturer is working on. They are not an announcement of series production models.
Honda and forced induction: the CX500 Turbo
The idea is not entirely new at Honda. The CX500 Turbo came onto the market in 1982, followed by the CX650 Turbo in 1983. The goal back then was the same as today: the power of a larger engine from less displacement. The difference lies in how the compressor is driven – on the CX500 Turbo the exhaust gas drove it, on the V3R it is an electric motor.
When will the V3R with E-Compressor arrive?
Since 2024, Honda has been saying that development is heading towards series production. In May 2026, a Honda official said in an interview that Honda wants to bring the V3R to market in this form, and in Europe first. As of 23 October 2026, there is no official production model, no date and no technical data. The next opportunity is EICMA 2026 in Milan from 3 to 8 November 2026 – whether Honda will show the production version there remains open.
Honda technology you can already ride today: the Honda E-Clutch for pulling away and changing gear without a clutch lever, and the dual clutch transmission Honda DCT. All current models are shown in the overview Honda models.
As of 23 October 2026: Honda has not yet announced the output, torque, weight, price or market launch of the V3R. This post is based on Honda's announcements, the published patent applications and an interview with Honda (sources below).

Frequently asked questions about the Honda E-Compressor
What is the Honda E-Compressor?
An electrically driven compressor: an electric motor turns the compressor wheel and forces more air into the engine. Honda shows it on the V3R 900 E-Compressor Prototype, a water-cooled V3 with a 75-degree cylinder angle.
Is the E-Compressor a turbo?
No. A turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gas, the E-Compressor by an electric motor. According to the patent applications, Honda's compressor uses neither exhaust energy nor engine power.
What is the displacement of the Honda V3R?
The prototype shown at EICMA 2025 has 900 cm³. Honda is aiming for performance on a par with a 1,200 cc engine; there are no official performance figures yet.
When will the V3R 900 come onto the market?
Honda has not named a date (as of 23 October 2026). According to Honda, the V3R is being developed towards series production; according to an interview from May 2026, Europe will be first in line.
Does the E-Compressor need a battery?
Yes, according to a Honda official, the prototype has its own battery for the compressor. Honda has not published the voltage or capacity.
