Electric motorcycle charging: plugs, charging time, range at a glance
Electric motorcycle charging does not take place at the fuel pump but where the motorcycle is parked: at home, at a wallbox or on the road at a rapid charger. Which plugs there are, how long charging takes and what the range figure means – with the figures of the Honda WN7 as an example.
Alternating current or direct current: Type 2 and CCS2
There are two ways to charge: alternating current (AC) from a household socket, a wallbox or a public charging station, and direct current (DC) at a rapid charger. The Honda WN7 has two connections for this: Type 2 for alternating current and CCS2 for direct current – the same standard as the Honda CR-V e:PHEV. Which connections another electric motorcycle has is stated in its data sheet.
How long does charging take?
The charging time depends on the charging power and the battery size. Taking the WN7 with 9.3 kWh as an example:
- Household socket 230 V: around 5.5 hours
- Wallbox 6 kVA: around 2.4 hours from 0 to 100 per cent; Honda Switzerland states under 2 hours 30 minutes
- Rapid charger (CCS2): from 20 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes – according to Honda, enough for around 89 km under ideal conditions
Range according to WMTC – and in everyday use
WMTC is the standardised test cycle for motorcycles. For the WN7, Honda states 140 km according to WMTC, with a consumption of 80 Wh per kilometre. In everyday use, as with any electric vehicle, the range depends on speed, temperature and riding style: if you ride a lot on the motorway, you will not get as far as in town traffic.
Recovering energy: regeneration
When you roll off the throttle, the electric motor can act as a generator and recharge the battery. On the WN7, you select this regeneration using paddles on the left grip in levels 0 to 3; in addition, there are the STANDARD, SPORT, RAIN and ECON riding modes. Frequently asked questions about electric motorcycle charging
How long does it take to charge an electric motorcycle?
That depends on the battery and the charging power. The Honda WN7 with 9.3 kWh needs around 5.5 hours at a household socket, around 2.4 hours at a wallbox (6 kVA) and under 30 minutes from 20 to 80 per cent at a rapid charger.
Which plug fits an electric motorcycle?
In Europe, Type 2 is the norm for alternating current and CCS2 for direct current at a rapid charger. Which connections a model has is stated in the data sheet; the WN7 has both.
Can you charge an electric motorcycle from a household socket?
Yes, if the model is designed for it. The Honda WN7 charges from a 230 V socket in around 5.5 hours.
What does WMTC mean for the range?
WMTC is the standardised test cycle for motorcycles. It makes figures comparable; in everyday use, the range depends on speed, temperature and riding style.
Can every electric motorcycle charge at a rapid charger?
Only models with a direct current connection (CCS2). The Honda WN7 has one and charges there from 20 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.
