Charging an electric motorcycle: what the Honda WN7 shows

Which plug fits, how long does charging take, and how far can you go? Using the Honda WN7, Honda's first fully fledged electric motorcycle, as an example, we show what matters when charging an electric motorcycle.

The battery of the Honda WN7

The Honda WN7 has a permanently installed 9.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. It sits low and centrally and is a load-bearing part of the chassis. Honda states a range of 140 km according to WMTC, the standardised test cycle for motorcycles, with a consumption of 80 Wh per kilometre. As with any electric vehicle, the range in everyday use depends on speed, temperature and riding style.

Charging an electric motorcycle: Type 2 and CCS2

The WN7 charges via two connections: Type 2 for alternating current (AC) at home, at a wallbox or at public charging stations, and CCS2 for direct current (DC) at a rapid charger. Honda thus uses the same standard as on the Honda CR-V e:PHEV.

  • Household socket (230 V): around 5.5 hours
  • Wallbox (6 kVA): around 2.4 hours from 0 to 100 per cent; Honda Switzerland states under 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Rapid charger (CCS2): from 20 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes – according to Honda, under ideal conditions this is enough for around 89 km

Riding modes and energy recovery

The WN7 has the riding modes STANDARD, SPORT, RAIN and ECON. Using paddles on the left grip, you select regeneration in levels 0 to 3: when you roll off the throttle, the motor then recovers energy. There is also a walking-pace mode forwards and backwards up to 5 km/h and a selectable speed limiter.

Output and licence

The liquid-cooled electric motor delivers 18 kW continuous output and 50 kW peak output, and torque is 100 Nm. Honda compares the output with a 600 cc combustion engine and the torque with a 1000 cc motorcycle. Top speed is 129 km/h and the weight is 217 kg. Honda Switzerland lists the WN7 for category A restricted (A2).
